  10. I think the shape hud is funny and I’m enjoying watching people freak out about somebody possibly stealing their shape. Get over yourself. Also shape-sellers are going to have to start actually producing something creative.

    20 – If people ask you for parts lists to your avatars it sounds like you’re a pushover who never set those boundaries to begin with. You create a virtual secret about people copying you but don’t have the balls to actually say something to them. That’s pathetic and meek. Quit being a worm and talk to them directly.

    • There was a Twitter thread about it. Watching people melt down over something this stupid was maddening. Some of them were even saying things like, “I’m never leaving my platform again” or “I’m going to only wear an ugly shape when I leave my land.” Literally cutting off their own noses to spite their faces.

      Some of them were crying for shape makers, trying to claim this is theft and illegal except you can’t own or copyright slider values. The shape makers will be fine. If you buy a new head or body, you’re not going to stand around hoping for a nice shape to pass by if you’re looking for something in particular. You’re going to shop for that shape you want and mess with it in your own personal space. Sales might go down, but shape makers have really been lucky to be able to make sales like this for this long. It was a matter of time before there was a change. They’re going to have to step up their game to make their shapes more appealing to purchase, like nice photos and lock style cards behind the purchase that have information people want or need.

      Someone brought up that this will hurt the shape makers that provide demos. You can already get and edit a shape (even if it’s no mod) through the developer menu in Firestorm, so this doesn’t really change anything.

      The irony is, the more people bitch about this and bring attention to it, the more people will just go buy the HUD.

      • The HUD has already been removed from the MP, probably due to mass flagging as called for by that twitter thread. I had not even heard about it and couldn’t find any info on it until the mention of twitter, but one way or another it’s gone, and people are working on a way to ban avatars who are wearing it from their regions as well.

      • Yeah someone linked me some screenshots of a bunch of thin-skinned whiners enacting a mass-reporting campaign to false flag the product. That’s a shame their witch hunt worked. I hope the creator appeals and it gets put back up since it wasn’t using any illegal tools to do what it did. I have no sympathy for these people when this isn’t even anywhere close to actual IP theft or copyright violations.

      • Forgot to mention the one I was shown was on Facebook from Revoul whipping their followers into a frenzy. Just goes to show where priorities lie because if their other products were good enough, this sort of thing wouldn’t threaten them that much. Guess they feel like they really need their shapes to “stand out”

      • I don’t care about shape creators; they’re just taking advantage of a lazy market, they don’t have to put a dime of their own money into selling shapes, so anything they make is pure profit. However, anyone who put the time and work into making a unique shape for themselves is totally justified in feeling this way; I can only guess it’s a bunch of frustrated, lonely generics who are excited about having a way to steal people’s appearance without making any effort of their own. Combine that “tool” with any illegal viewer that can steal textures, and you can literally clone someone’s avatar- but only someone totally pathetic would even want to do that. Once there is a way to ban the HUDs, I’ll definitely have that enabled on any parcels I own.

      • You do you, that’s totally within reason, but that’s a flimsy argument based on whataboutism. If someone was going to go that far to actually bot your individual textures with an illegal viewer they wouldn’t need a separate tool to do it. Those viewers can dump it all on their own. The best someone could do without an illegal viewer is look at the flattened texture layers through a cache viewer.

        You’re right, if someone is going to flat out clone someone, they may be less than creative in their own right; but (actual) theft issues side for textures and the like, what does it hurt? They’re slider values. Someone in SL having the same shape as someone isn’t a big deal and it’s actually kinda vain to put that much stock into it.

        Also, the arguement that it’s based off someone’s “hard work and time” could also apply to the shape sellers. So why is it they’re taking advantage of people and is a non-issue and if it happens to non-commercial targets, it’s an issue? Either shapes have value based on the factors of time and effort or they don’t.

      • You could make that same weak argument for stealing anyone’s art- “who does it hurt”- and the only people who would even say something like that are those who can’t create anything exceptional themselves. There’s nothing wrong with being proud and possessive of your creative work, even if the jealous call that “vanity”. If you had ever felt that pride yourself, this conversation would never have happened.

      • Your example is in no way comparitive and cheapens the concept of art theft. Manipulating a set of sliders in a character creation menu is not the same as someone creating an original work from scratch. A much closer comparison would be to furries on DA who try to “claim” colour pallets for their characters and become upset when other people figure it out or use it. Not to mention, you still harpoon your entire point by saying “I don’t care if shape sellers get ripped off but if someone steals some individual’s shapes it’s wrong.” Either it’s all wrong or it’s all not an issue.

        The only difference in either of those situations is that you’re viewing this through the lens of not wanting someone to find the combination of numbers you did, it has nothing at all to do with the merits of “creative work”, ergo the title of vanity.

        Not too long ago, people who thought like that used to wear anti-inspection shields while in public SL sims to bogart the combination of things they wore on the basis of “well I put together this outfit, this is the result of my creativity!” And yet we have completely accessible and accepted HUDs and built in viewer methods to derender/bypass those because they don’t count as a protectable ‘creative’ asset. Neither do shapes, they’re not a protectable asset and never have been. If you think this is in error, please take some time to Google if you can turn in shape copying to LL under DMCA.

        I’m not going to stoop to personal attacks like you did, however, just pointing out the holes I see in your logic.

      • I’m going to play devil’s advocate here a bit. If they come out with a way to ban the hud, would that not involve scanning each avatar that goes on the land, to see what they are wearing/using, in order to determine if they have it on? There were several comments in that Twitter thread where they voiced concern in regards to their privacy, with a hud scanning them. Would that not be a little hypocritical? Also, from my understanding, the hud was taken off the MP, so why are looking to ban something that is not available now? Please make this make sense?

    I never once saw any type of a story line, not even a one time thing, let alone anything on going, from any supposed rp’er in any of the communities. Most now have no idea what role playing is, they think it’s just renting in a “role play community” because it’s prettier having all of the extras that we don’t get renting land ourselves.

    The only way to have another community work would be for the owner(s) to be wealthy enough to be unconcerned much about paying the monthly tier on months without enough residents and without the help of funders. An actual business person could make the rent work from residents to actually pay the sim tier after filling the rentals. A successful business person knows though that there’s little profit in it. But, without a bunch of busy-body funders acting like it’s ‘their’ community and not the owner’s because they’re kicking in, it could actually work. Job ads and positions could be real and not so rigged…it could even be fun. People might even want to stay.

If she wasn’t just another event owner, her so “fake” friends would have left her ages ago. Silvia treats like shit not only designers that she thinks they have nothing to offer to the event, but also her own co- workers. Many designers had been spoken through out the years but they got ignored. Why? Ask yourself. Why you still know that she is such a bullie, but still going to shop at her event.

    • Ivanka, how is Silvia a bully? Because she expects quality from the participants of her events instead of accepting substandard items? The reason for that is not about being a bully, but instead about giving and offering the best to SL buyers/consumers, I say that is mighty amazing work ethic and professionalism. The way you speak of things make it sound like you’re the “Silvia” authority when reality is, you do not even know a single freaking thing about her except for her name, so how would you know how the people she works with feel about her? Have you ask any of them? Secondly, speaking of designers, her events have over 100 designers per round, have you went around and ask each one how they feel about her? If not, I suggest that at times the best thing to do when one knows nothing is to keep their mouth shut less it makes one looks stupid.

    • #34 It is not about if a pc can handle is, it is just insanely bad design. You can achive the same thing with textures and lower poly. Don`t be stupid. Nobody wants high poly shit, because it is just horrible game design and it actually breaks your even amazing gpu

      • That is a matter of opinion only usually given by people with under powered equipment. Here is a gross example “If this hill wasn’t so steep my 40hp Yugo wouldn’t struggle and lose speed going up this hill. They should ban hills this steep or made a tunnel!! It’s unfair!!!” You knew you needed to go up this hill everyday yet you bought a Yugo anyways. The onus is on you to make the correction. SL is user generated content. You knew that ahead of time. There is no central authority to force people to make things to your specific liking. So either derender it or spend the correct amount of money to view it properly. The choice is yours. I know I sound like a bitch but that is the cold hard reality and reality really sucks sometimes.

      • But this isn’t a “proper game”. It’s Second Life. It is a completely different product. There are no team leaders or product managers with multi million dollar budgets screaming at their fleet of designers to increase efficiency. It’s Joe from Alabama or Sveta from Bratislava making creations during their free time. They do not have the advantages in time and budgets a professional game studio will have. You just can’t compare a “proper game” to Second Life because it never intended to be one.

      • Can someone please explain to me, how lower poly can still look as good, when polygons are literally what makes the surface of an item?

      • It doesn’t. It’s an optimization to reduce load so lower spec computers do not have to allocate as much cpu/gpu power as for a high poly model. High poly models are fantastic in terms of detail but you will run across grumpy people complaining its introducing too much lag. The same people will also complain about high rez textures.

    • Call me crazy but I don’t think it’s really kinkshaming to be like “It’s weird that a kink item is at an event for avatars who would get in a lot of trouble socially, and possibly legally, if they got involved in kink scenes.” I thought one of the arguments for DDLG (and related kinks) being okay was that it only involves adults, not children or things bearing the likeness of children.

    • The issue with these isn’t the style. Cult is using a brand character without licensing it from the company that created it. They should have reached out to Tokidoki (the brand) before lifting the official art and using in their mesh. Cult doesn’t mention the brand Tokidoki anywhere, so it doesn’t look like they obtained a license to use this character or art and just stole it hoping nobody would notice.

      If you want an example of a creator who has properly reached out to a brand and obtained the necessary licenses to release official merch in SL, just take a look at Astralia’s deal with Sanrio.

The whole baby face thing is pretty dumb to me… I GOT one in the real… I am turning 30 next month… Yes I like to use my face in SL, YES I don’t want to be super thicc… I am thick in RL though… NO I didn’t have breasts till AFTER I was legally able to drink.. I was also extremely athletic and worked out a LOT…. I’m 5’2… I prefer to use that shape in SL.. IDC if other people want to be 6 foot and taller… I’M not you! I’ve publicly shared my rl vs sl photos on facebook on multiple occasions when it comes back out as a thing to do. People see my RL photo on my profile every time and comment about my avi looking just like me. Yeah it’s a place I don’t have to look like myself.. I don’t, but I also prefer to keep a lot of aspects of my reality to feel more like myself when I’m in character… You don’t get to tell me that I can’t wear bows and ruffles.. I do in RL… nobody complained yet that I’m a bad person… I wear dresses and rompers when I find them offline too. WHY NOT? I’m cute, I can be… I’m not claiming to be a child anywhere either… my profile says in multiple places that I’m 29.. Heck I even get bruises and cuts in RL…OMG I’M A HUMAN!!!       A bad actor can access your land even when you limit access using the default SL options – not everyone knows they need a security orb as backup.

      We’ve all been griefed at one point or another and it doesn’t feel particularly good. I get that it’s not actual rape but it is still gross behavior. Taking photos of the act and sending it to people and posting it in your profile is equally shitty.

      Is it to the level of a RL attack? Of course not, but it’s still gross.

      I’ve known people to fall asleep on SL – or have partners/friends in different time zones – maybe they like the thought of “sleeping” in their own beds. It doesn’t matter.

      You made a list of a bunch of reasons why being griefed was somehow her fault – you’re kind of shitty too.

      • I didn’t deliberately misgender anyone; everything in the Kottr store is made for female bodies, so I made an incorrect assumption that the creator was female. That however is the only incorrect thing I said. All you’re doing is making excuses for things that were never accused; obviously he doesn’t have to do anything he doesn’t want to do. If he chooses not to do the work to support larger markets, he won’t get the business from those markets. It’s not about right or wrong, that is simply facts.

        That’s why Maze is getting more credit than he is for his own idea, the choice to not “stress himself” marketing to or supporting human avatars. I personally think the Kottr mod has a much more realistic shape, and the fact that there are size options makes it a better choice, but that will never matter if they are both more expensive and harder to use, on top of being sold by someone who mostly ignores the majority market. That doesn’t make him “wrong”, it just means he will make less money for his work, and fewer people will be aware he did it first. The fact that “he doesn’t know how to make a dev kit” means what; that he was less prepared to release his creation? Why would that matter to customers?

        You’ll get no disagreement from me that applying normal and spec maps is easy, but I’ve been modding everything around me for years. When I see people popping into group chats daily who are still confused by BOM… which is just layering, the simplest concept imaginable… the idea of trying to teach those people how to do manual modding makes my head ache, and I really doubt most others are stoked to do it either. You have to make things in SL for the “explain it like I’m 5” level, and Maze did that. My comment was intended to explain why Maze was more popular than Kottr, and nothing you said disproved any of it; your response was butthurt hot air. Perhaps you are the “rude CSR” mentioned in another comment?

    • Kottr made it first BUT Kottr is 1.2kL$ per body (gotta pay another 1.2k for the other body) and per accessory type (1.2k for socks, 1.1k for garters). Which is a scam =D Maze includes the 2 types of accessories and 2 bodies (soon 3, and other things) for around 600L$ ? AND also they made it inmensly easy for designers to make for it because the dev kit is included in the purchase. Maze also managed to create a whole community around it in discord where they take suggestions from customers with a section for designers and bloggers to showcase the products. Kottr and their rude CSR could NEVER.

Back in my first year or two in SL, I had a security orb that notified me of intruders on my mainland parcel. I elected to eject them before I TPd back to my house. They had been screwing on my bed. Why did I feel like I needed to change the bed and spray SLysol? It’s just pixels, but it still felt like a gross invasion. I also take umbrage if some rando slaps my ass in a club, even though it’s just a HUD and some sound effects.     • The problem with 22 is that Cult is using official art from a brand called Tokidoki with that unicorn character without obtaining any apparent license to use the character or art. Tokidoki licenses out their art and characters and also does their own releases much like Sanrio. Cult should have reached out to Tokidoki if they wanted to release merchandise with their Unicorno character, in the same way that Astralia had reached out to Sanrio to release officially licensed merchandise.

      If they did get a license, that’s cool, but leaving it unbranded by Tokidoki makes it likely they just stole the art.

    • Many anime characters are under 18. Especially in popular animes. And anime bypasses the whole pedolaw by stating some characters are 18 when they don’t look anywhere near 18. Same is with many ageplayers in SL. It’s a way to get around the whole rule. Just state your avatar or character is 18 but make them look like they are way below 16.
