    • I just don’t see the point of child avis in general on SL. There might have been an honest reason and people did start out innocently with having child avis. It’s really for those who want to RP a family or maybe there is some kind of subconscious comfort for someone who is indecisive on kids and wants to try it in the virtual world.

      However, it’s gone off the rails in the past few years and we’ve been seeing it on here. Got all of these demented creators making shit that no normal kid would wear or do. All of these mentally inefficient people running around as child avis doing things no normal child would behave like or get themselves into, like what an adult does.

      And the child avis themselves are either ugly as shit or they’ve been prettied up to look like some fashion statement. All of those honest ideas and concepts for children on SL is out the damn window at this point. Mind as well just wrap it up, cut your losses and get rid of the entire thing already. Too many stupid fucking people ruining things for everyone.

      • I can kinda explain but I’m not a hardcore SLer any longer. I stop in to see friends now and ride my bike on mainland to relax and explore and that’s about it.

        It’s a complete removal from the adult side of SL (the sex, the dating, etc) for me. If someone hits on me, they’re a sicko and it ain’t normal. I don’t want to be seen as anything sexual and kids aren’t sexual. I did family rp for a bit but it was a tiny family and we went our own ways years ago. I stay out of the ‘community’ because it’s just drama like you said. There aren’t many of us genuine kids left.

I really do wish there was some place that could be supportive and inclusive. The last thing I would call SL Pride would be inclusive which is terrible. That sort of deceit has deeply hurt people, and I suppose everyone has different values – not sure what yours are – but to the majority of people, those things are not ok and actually cruel. I don’t think SL was created for that purpose, exactly.

      • There’s a very simple way to live an ethical SL- if you are playing a role, be up front about that and don’t get involved in OOC personal relationships under false pretenses. Period. I don’t just mean “romance”; it’s just as shitty to lie to people who you call friends. I don’t care what the excuse is- your character can be anything, but you should never proclaim that character is who you are in real life and deliberately engage other people’s real feelings with it. You don’t have to tell anyone anything you don’t want to about your real life to avoid lying either- just don’t answer real life questions at all if you won’t be honest. That should be an obvious choice for anyone who is only in SL to rp a fictional character anyway.

        I understand that the other side of this is the lonely people who fall in love with anyone who is nice to them, whether it’s IC or OOC. There’s nothing you can really do to help those people, but as long as you didn’t lie to them about your reality or your intentions, what they assume is not your problem. The moment you do lie though, you’re the asshole, no matter how pathetic the other person is.

      It is stalker-ish. It tells the person who took said photograph that they hadn’t moved on from their angst over said ex. It is possessive. To say someone “owns the photo” is saying they own the likeliness of the individual in said photo which is horribly wrong and therefore the individual has more of a right and say to not want to be presented.

        The difference here is that with modeling, it’s primarily a business and it’s for business purposes. Models sign contracts, usually they don’t read the fine print just like most don’t read the legal agreements to many things. But they do sign some of their rights away which is why they don’t legally own their own images or have the jurisdictions to request some pictures to be taken down, it’d end up requiring lawsuits.

        This does not apply to some random dude’s public flickr or anyone’s flickr or photo gallery because it is not a business and there are no contracts. Doesn’t matter if there’s some ‘promise’ or whatever. If there’s no legal binding contract in place, it doesn’t matter. Therefore, there is no ownership in place.

        Fine if you honor it, that’s good. But, it speaks about what character you are if you’re persistent in not removing something when asked.

        My photos mean a lot to me both for my own learning curve and for the memories they hold. Good and bad, they all represent lessons learned.

      • This is the crux that your ignoring. Photographers own the rights to the photo. It’s not about owning a person. It’s a screenshot taken in a virtual world of a moment in time and it’s 100% the property of the person who took the screenshot.

        I am sorry if this doesn’t work for whatever the narrative might be in this situation. However, you’ll be hardpressed to find an SL photographer to agree with you. We have our work stolen and manipulated enough as it is. We aren’t going to give up ownership to disgruntled exes and their disgruntled future partners, too.

      • SL Photography isn’t really much of a business, it’s an honest hobby. What you own is the images that you take of yourself and the images of general things like virtual worlds or even clubs that aren’t promoting.

        You do not own the rights of other people, what’s not to understand? If they can contest it easily than they would if they were bound by some agreement, then that’s not true ownership. If a place like Flickr gets involved to take an image down via report/request, then it’s not true ownership and you’ve taken a picture without permission and only pretended you got permission.

        You don’t really make the rules but it sounds like you do, to make people believe that they don’t have a say when they really do. Makes me wonder what kind of skeletons you’ve got in your closet now.

        And your refusal to remove images of exes and people who maybe didn’t really ask to be in the picture at all, constitutes as you being complicit and subjected to be involved in whatever happens whether you want to or not. If you don’t want problems coming to your door, you’d do the right thing to avoid it.

      • I think the real point of clarity needed here is your insistence that a photographer does not have all rights reserved for an image they take of another person. This is not true and I really hope you come to understand this some day. Here is a LegalZoom page specifically stating that the creator holds ALL RIGHTS to an image the moment it is created. There is no exception as to the content of the image. The only exception would be like if they work for someone else and are contractually giving rights to their employer, or something similar. This is just a fact, much as you may dislike it. If you were to call up your favorite lawyer and ask them, they will say the same thing. How do you think paparazzi are able to take pics of celebrities and sell them to the top bidder? Most of those photographers are freelance, which means they are not bound by any contracts at all. They can take any pics they want to and with the exception of deep faking them, they can do pretty much anything they want with them. You need literally only google “does a photographer own their photos” and you will see pages upon pages of the answer you don’t want to see.

I was curious as to why you had a strong opinion about keeping photos up or taking them down and while I’m still confused as to the original issue, I’m fully satisfied that you’re not interested in the reality of the situation. You don’t own the rights to your avatar. Linden Labs can delete your entire inventory tomorrow and there’s not a thing you can do about it. Flickr won’t help you. You’re best bet was to ask to have the photos by the copyright holder, which they were under no obligation to do.

        You have no idea who I am or what I may know about running a photography business in SL. I’m very well versed in my rights and responsibilities as an SL photographer. But I do. And while I wish you well, I’m going to have to strongly disagree with your main point that a model owns the right to a photo. Especially a pixelated one that willingly posed for said photo.

        I’m going to give you a nickle’s worth of free advice. Derender your avatar under your clothing. Anyone can make “you” nude anytime in SL. There’s nothing you can do about it. Linden Labs won’t do anything. Flickr won’t care. I’m not making a moral judgement. It’s just reality.

        I’m really curious as to what part YOU are in this photo-takedown demand. Are you the jealous new partner who can’t handle that there’s a thing called The Past™? Block the photographer or simply stop looking them up 🙂 You cannot force anyone to do what you want them to, and it’s not very healthy to focus so hard on this.         I don’t have a lot of pictures of my exes because they are to me, bad bittersweet memories that I don’t need around. And I feel that if I keep them around for no reason, then that means to me, that I’m not letting go.

        However, as I pointed out in my comment (that you did not quote) everyone and every relationship is different and people are allowed to run their Flickrs however they want.

        That being said, there are pics of myself on the streams of at least one ex I wish he would delete. I could politely ask him to take them down, if he says no I can politely ask that he un-tag my name from those pictures, and if again he says no, then I was right to leave him cos he is indeed the shitty person I still think he is.

        I do not have the right to demand that he remove them, as it is his Flickr stream, especially true cos he is a pro member and pays for the extras pro gives people.

        In the end, I would just rather not talk to him or let him have any power over me or live rent free in my head, so I just carry on with my life and not dwell on it.

        I did say I deleted pics of my exs on my stream, but I do have a few pics of one ex from six years ago still there. I don’t have any feelings for him or want him back, or am stalking him. I just genuinely liked him and the pictures we took were great, and they still make me smile when I remember the fun we had together.

        The rest of my exs…their pictures are all stored in a zipped folder buried on my hard drive where I know where they are, but don’t have to see them.

        I do understand where you are coming from though (been there myself), and wish you all the best.

        1 – “i’ve defeated your little argument…” – no you have not lol. you’ve assumed their statement, in my opinion, incorrectly. I interpreted “something hinky went down” as meaning the reason for the end of the relationship, not that some drama happened about said pictures. If it was a bad breakup, sure yes delete the pics if you don’t want the reminder. but just automatically bcs you’re not together anymore? nah. some people DO sometimes remain friends or enjoy looking back fondly. OR that photo is popular and part of their portfolio.
        I don’t see any other ways that you tried to “defeat” that sentence… so I’ll move on..

        2 – yes, if someone asks you politely to remove pics of them, it would be the decent thing to do. but the commenter is more correct than you would like to think. generally speaking, a photographer owns the right to any image they take and if consent to be photographed was provided in any kind of written form then they have even more rights. does it make them a shitty person to keep them up after being asked to remove them? most likely yes. but if the person went about asking like you went about this comment… I’m not surprised they said they wouldn’t take them down.

        and just a side thought here… exes are like assholes, everyone’s got one. anyone that causes drama over seeing their new partner in an old photo with someone they are no longer with or associated with… that person is more possessive than the photographer who won’t take it down. just sayin.

By looking up that person’s Flickr, most likely because they are your “ex” or whatever. They’re likely also incredibly insecure and are going to be a constant jealousy issue. Why would you get involved with someone like that? Is it desperation or do you just get off on constant drama? No matter how many photos we have done (partners or friends), once the relationship is dissolved so is my consent for you to use the photos of my avi in it.
