  2. 8 Your friend is seeing the effect because it’s happening, yeah. I looked at those particular hairs. But the reason it’s happening isn’t down to rigged or unrigged.

    These two hairs (for some reason) have different texture alpha modes on. The Alpha modes are how SL handles transparent (or semi transparent) textures — like the png/clear background sorta textures a hair uses. The rigged hair is using Alpha Blending. The unrigged hair is using Alpha Masking.

    Alpha Blending always fucks up with other transparent layers (HD eyebrows or most lashes will count for this). But it is smoother and can be partially translucent.

    Alpha Masking doesn’t but it doesn’t look as ‘smooth’ and often is hard to work with unless you make the texture with masking in mind. But it doesn’t cause the issue where a ‘halo’ around the texture appears like Blending.

    The issue here is that the creator didn’t put them both as Alpha Masking for some reason. You can have rigged or unrigged of either masking or blending. Whether a hair (or bangs) are rigged or not don’t mess with the transparency layers. Many creators choose blending because it’s easier to work with in a lot of ways.

    Like I mentioned last week : if you think there’s an issue or want a different version of the hair that’s masking and rigged, I’d contact a creator. It was probably a mistake.

    • It’s a pretty big trend in the black community in SL, a lot of folks don’t like how stiff and lifeless mesh hair is so they opt for using flexis, even if it’s not great either.

    • If done right, flexi hair can be quite nice in my opinion. Especially when it’s a ponytail and should sway around. Really looking forward to the day SL could sport something similar to dynamic bones though.

      • The newer stuff isn’t always. The multi style hairs like doux can be horrible by comparison

      • I think flexi can be cute as added whispies around your face, in addition to a mesh ponytail, or in hairstyles shorter than shoulder length; otherwise, it looks ridiculous and spends most of its time buried completely inside the very large bodies of the women who prefer it.

Most of it is more catered to the stereotypical femboy community, which I also like to wear, but more options for shirts and suits would be great.

  19. #18 I have both Legacy and Maitreya bodies. Maitreya was “retired” by me Jan 2020 but it’s still a great “value” mesh body with incredible support.

Maitreya is still a good body. I used it for many years before switching to Legacy. I like Maitreya because there are far more clothing options but in truth, Legacy gave me the curves I was looking for. Also not everyone can afford to drop the cash on a new body. Let everyone choose what they want and quit judging them for it. You sound ridiculous.

Some bodies are just better depending what you are trying to make. I’ve seen people with ebody reborn making it look like legacy slim body. i hate the hips of maitreya if i try to give slight curves and legacy is great i just dont like the legs. ebody is a perfect mesh mix on the slim thick shape im tryna go for. But we dont wanna talk about how to shape since people who are nazi for their bodies lack those skills.

I could say the same for thick mesh bodies that have the ankles of a toddler. Put hooker heels on feet with those tiny ankles, and all I can do when I see them is cringe and wait for the sound of breaking bones. I would love to have, shall we say, a plumper body, but it needs to be realistic, not a caricature, and also not be a walking lag fest. If so many stores hadn’t dumped Slink Hourglass, I probably would have gone with that one. Her latest bodies (Cinnamon and Chai) just won’t cut it either.

  32. The funniest thing this week is dumb people getting mad at the post that is actually defending Maitreya, albeit with inaccurate numbers, and talking shit to the poster because context is too hard  😂  😂  your grade school language arts teachers would be so sad.

    The version of each body represented would have been useful, and it makes no sense to list bodies with no onion layers for appliers with those that do still have them. All bodies should be offering a no-layer, BOM only version by now, frankly. That’s one of the points I’ll give people against Legacy, along with the separate hands for no reason and the lack of nail polish options.

    I’m still pretty sure anyone who doesn’t see how much better it looks than Lara are those who live in CalWL or some other bright, flat lighting that kills materials, and use low graphics. Just shining a light across the tummy in a shadowy environment would be all the proof they needed that they’re settling for less, but their prebuilt Dells and notebooks with onboard graphics would catch fire.

    • Separate hands and feet for no reason in this day and age is so unnecessary. Even if you really wanted to bust out some Slink feet and some vintage shoes, you could just alpha out the feet. Onion layers: also weird. The tech has moved past the need for them, and they’re cumbersome.

      A lot of people like the look of Legacy and that’s the main reason I think we all choose the body or bodies that we wear, but they are not the most up-to-date with the actual features and design of the body.

      • The Legacy deformer feet allow you to use any ankle high Maitreya/Slink shoes without alphas, and actually have a better ankle curve than the standard feet, so those are worth the extra attachment point. Otherwise you’re correct; Legacy definitely needs to offer a BOM only version, and I will never stop bitching about the toenails until they release an applier kit or let us alpha them so replacement toenails don’t have to cover the whole toe to look nice.

        I demo everything with a critical eye, because I have no problem spending money, but don’t want to waste it. I’ve never said Legacy was “perfect”, but the details built into the mesh are simply unmatched by any other brand- the closest is Reborn, but the tummy lacks Legacy definition, and the spine indentation is too deep for some reason, along with the ass being way too high without deformers. Belleza bodies are next after Reborn; all 3 brands have some muscle definition in the arms and legs instead of featureless sticks and straws, a defined crease where the ass meets thigh, and no ugly gap in the armpits if you have realistic shoulders. It’s funny to me that anyone thinks setting their shoulder slider below 10 is an acceptable option to deal with that- and it’s still ugly, even when you make the gap smaller.

        I really thought Erika was going to be a contender, but then I saw a girl on all 4s in it… go ahead, grab a demo and bend it over. The lower back distorts wildly out of shape like the kidneys are trying to escape in opposite directions, so the rigging must be really bad. Maybe if that gets a major update, it’ll be worth buying.

    • I hate that Legacy doesn’t do “shine”/materials without the onion layers. I mean, SLink has none and still manages to have a very nice shine/sheen to it. I can’t wear a body shine and show it off say under a semi-transparent dress without the under-body showing through. So annoying. -_- esp since most of my skins are fantasy colored and don’t match any of the pre-built skins in the Legacy HUD.

      And the separate hands are feet are so unnecessary…or at least make it like Kupra that has an all-in-one or one that’s got separate components.

      • Every body needs a layer for materials. BOM doesn’t support materials- it’s always an applier. But I definitely agree that bodies no longer need any additional layers beyond the one for materials, and should include the option to get rid of the tattoo/clothing ones, to reduce complexity. Definitely Legacy’s biggest failing at the moment, but not enough to give up how it looks for me personally because my computer has no issue rendering Legacy bodies. I would pay for the option to derender all shelf ass Kupras by default though, that’s for sure. For every 1 Kupra user that looks ok, there are 20+ that look like poorly drawn hentai characters.

        I wonder how many people crying about lag over bodies keep their draw distance high for no reason? If so, why are you forcing your poor abused potato to render things way further away than you’re ever looking, expect perhaps during photography? FS has presets now so you can save your laggy settings for high quality photos, and then change them to something more functional for the rest of the time with a simple drop down menu, just FYI to everyone. No need to give up shadows or advanced lighting if you’re not trying to pointlessly render every parcel around you.

      • Hmm that could be the case for layers, but Slink nor Kupra have the problems I’m having with the Legacy tattoo layers of the onion layer showing through if wearing semi-transparent clothing sadly.

        And hey, not all Kupra wearerrs have that shelf ass, I really hate that part of the kupra body, that and the tits! I just want a goddamn proper hourglass shape with nice tits and ass!!!! >.< Legacy needs to make/allow their waist line to be modded, every other part of their body can use external deformers, why not the waist! -_-

      • Legacy can’t stop waist deformers from working with their body; I don’t know why you think they wouldn’t. Any waist deformer would work on any body, regardless of which one they’re made for, but the effect might be different than pictured.

      • I demo’d two or three and none of them worked. When I asked the creators if it was their item or the body itself, they said it was indeed legacy’s body that the waist wasn’t re-sizeable. If you have a brand you use could u post here please? Thanks!

      • Draw distance is set to low for me, I have a whole list of saved settings for photos, events, etc. You don’t need to have your draw distance high when you’re inside a shop or a building. A lot of users just don’t get how SL renders things. Legacy bodies and Catwa heads still take the longest to render for me on a very not potato custom desktop. I always know who is wearing them. Kupra doesn’t give me that issue but sometimes I wish it did…

    • Maitreya has its onion layers separate as wearables and Belleza went full modify meaning you can strip them off yourself. The complexity drops dramatically if you do.

      Legacy bodies take the longest for me to render on a high end gaming desktop (Dell? Oh please…I customed this desktop), sometimes they don’t render at all. This shouldn’t be happening when no other body gives me that issue.

      Not everyone wants to look photorealistic.I have no idea why human avatars, even kid avatars, suddenly want to look creepy realistic. The uncanny valley vibes I get from those smile app avatar photos…

  34. #18- Getting some mixed messages from this one. You’re wanting people to use something other than Maitreya, but also saying Maitreya is good for having lower triangles? That’s not even the right triangle count for Slink Hourglass or Kupra, HG is 230k tris for the classic (omega) and 97k tris for the redux (BOM.) Kupra is around 457k tris last I checked. Come back with a clearer message and the right info.

    #35- That sounds not only boring and a waste of money, but a lot of people use the garlic necklace which blocks bite requests so you wouldn’t even got a reaction from most people. They’re not gonna be annoyed for more than a couple minutes even if they’re not using the garlic necklace. Find a better hobby, learn to make stuff with all that time you’d be wasting. Get some cute clothes or furniture or something out of that deal, maybe even make some money.

    #37- I think you should find someone to talk to about how you feel, instead of going through all that effort of doing something you don’t care about to piss someone else off. Follow the same advice I gave to #35 and use that time and energy on something else, like idk. Learning to make animations for SL, god knows there’s a need for more full-perm bento animations and at least you’d get something you could feel proud of for longer.

      • Well, until Evo/Evo X came out, there were only two popular options for heads, Catwa and Genus. Sure, there are a lot of other heads out there (Akeruka’s kind of been lurking all along but hasn’t gained market share). I refused to use Catwa as I hate that HUD. Catwa hasn’t released anything since HDPRO. I think the simple reason Genus got popular was because of their free heads. People keep posting on here bitching because nobody creates skins for Genus and Catwa any more, but why should they? Genus is dead in the water and Catwa? Who the heck knows what’s going on there. Lelutka giving out multiple gift heads (that have easy to use HUDs and good animations and excellent skin and makeup support) over the past couple of years was a game changer.

      • Some of the Genus heads are very pretty; I wore one for quite a while myself. The original “babyface” option was overused to the point of being as boring as Catya, but the other non-freebies (that “strong face gift” nose is so bad, can spot it from across the room) could look great and unique with a good shape.

        At least, until you flip the animation HUD on, the eyes start rolling back in the head, and the tongue gets glitched out through your lips and only an “undeform” would fix it. Forget about using mouth animations for local speaking; they’re a fucking disaster, and for some reason once you turned them on once, you could never really turn them off. The only way to use a Genus head successfully without being a static-faced mannequin who doesn’t even blink is to rez a copy that has never had the Genus animations turned on(just delete that hud, it’s that useless), disable automatic eye movement in your viewer, and find a third party face AO that is compatible. They exist, but when I was shopping for them there weren’t many and they were not cheap.

        Also yes, anyone who really believes they’re going to do updates at this point is gullible as fuck. They’re stuck with that crappy neck seam and poorly laid out HUD until they finally decide they’ve gotten their money’s worth out of that 3-4k and move on.

        Actually what I want is the shape of Belleza Isis body because it’s the mix of things but it’s not very popular so there is that.

        I have played around with ebody and there is no way to get the shape I want from it, same thing with kupra. And that’s ok because I don’t have to have those bodies.

        I’m not always thrilled with Maitreya but a lot of the clothes I have are only for Maitreya and even though I have various outfits and body/head combos saved I just default back to what is easier for me.
