    • I was one of her kids. I haven’t spoken to her in a long while so she might have changed, but at the time she was one of the neediest people I’ve ever met. She had to be on voice all the time and if you didn’t answer her calls, she’d freak out and spam call you until you picked up. She’d also say that she was happy with you and then go out and put up an adoption panel without any discussion. Her kids weren’t allowed to have adult lives, or private lives.     #19 Lmao. I like how this person is acting like they’ve discovered some unknown top secret cutting edge feature on SL. Everyone knows voice changers exists. Most people can also tell when someone is using a voice changer because of how unnatural their voice sounds. Most gender swapping voice changers (I assume this is what you’re getting at) work by changing the pitch of the human voice. Changing the pitch is extremely easy, BUT it’s not enough. The major flaw here is their inability to change the timbre of the voice convincingly. Think of Amy Winehouse’s voice, her singing voice is fairly low pitch, but she still sounds distinctly female, that’s because her timbre is distinctly female. Most male to female voice changers just jack up the pitch of a person’s voice because of the false notion that females have higher pitched voices so that must mean increasing a male voice’s pitch alone would make it sound female. td;dr Voice changers are not magic, it’s obvious when someone is using it.

In order for it not to be a queer tax, they would need to sell three different lower priced versions, one with just M/F, one with just M/M and one with just F/F. It has nothing to do with the group discount.

    The hardest part of being an actual DJ is making your own playlists, making sure everything sounds good together, and trying to fit in really *really* bad requests so they don’t break the mood you’re creating (some club goers are absolutely tone deaf and will request things like a song from the 40’s in the middle of your Rave set). If you’re live djing and creating the playlist on the spot, that’s even more challenging.

  30. 15 Hi, some of you have called me a “retard”(You take that high road sweetheart!). You know, the one that made the post about BackBone… It seems I need to clear up my position, as my post seemed to “whoosh” right over some of your heads.

    A) Some of you seem to think that I didn’t already know the Adult+ version of their products comes with the most animations out of the 3 options. I do understand this point. I’m not unobservant, despite some of your assertions. No one is saying that more animations should be less money.

    B) MF cuddle animations are unusable for gay men. MF animations assume that one of the avatars is bigger and the other is smaller. So no matter how you adjust the poses, someone is always clipping into the other or your limbs are hanging in the air.

    C)The point is this; If you’re an LGBT customer shopping at BackBone, you’re always paying a higher price for items than straight customers. If we want to shop there, we have no option in that store other than to buy the most expensive version, always. Not only that, they pack in a bunch of hetero and polyamorous animations I’ll never use(But I’m expected to pay for). I like BackBone’s designs. They appeal to my aesthetic. I want to give them my business. It’s a shame that they don’t simply offer LGBT versions of their stuff, rather than assuming that a gay person is going to want/use straight animations and poly animations.

    D) For those of you telling me to just go shop elsewhere; Duh! I am. However, I do want as many LGBT folks in SL to know that BackBone is here to rip them off.

    • Well if you’re asexual, you get the cheapest price since you’re only buying the PG stuff so not all LGBT+ folks are getting ripped off. Just saying.

      My only grump with them is when a set is adult only. I don’t want these crap sex animations, I just want the pretty holo furnishings.

      • That’s my point though A-Kid. If you did want to cuddle, pg style, with someone of the same sex, they only put that in the Adult+ version. So yeah, if having non-clipping animations and poses is something that matters, you are potentially getting ripped off, even as an Ace.

        I’ll nip the next part in the bud; We could also say that this doesn’t always apply to bisexual and pansexual people, as they would often require the extra sets of animations, and thus pay more for the extra content. However, there are lots of bisexual/pansexual people in monogamous relationships with same-sex partners, so they would be dealing with that upcharge too.

    • Actually, while maybe now how I would have put it, their issue raises a few valid points….

      1. It takes time to set up animations in furniture, esp adult. However, there is no difference if its set up in the same piece of furniture or separate pieces of furniture, either way the animations still need to be set up. So it benefits the creator MORE by having them in the same, then they can charge more as they have more animations in that one piece of furniture, rather htan having them separate and charging the same price for each.
      2. There are a limited number of actual gay animations so for either the straight or gay versions, so the majority of adult animations creators buy were created using a male and female avatars by the animator and are sold that way. You are likely to find the same animations in both. So you could be paying more for using the same animations in different menus.
      3. Gay animations are selected and set up more for gay sex, so this means a difference in positioning the avatars… so a lot of the straight animations dont work as well without having to spend time repositioning their avatars and who wants to interrupt their fun to do that 🙂

    • It’s been a while since I bought animations, but back when I did, the full perm variety (that you could use in furniture you were going to sell) that was at all “unusual” (meaning, there were a million other exactly the same options) was crazy expensive. Like thousands per animation. I don’t know the backbone creator, but it may just be them trying to recoup some of their excessive costs from a limited market. It reminds me of when there used to be very few creators for men’s clothing, and men would complain that the only ones who did make male options, charged too much. If the market is smaller, it’s going to cost more, because the creator is going to sell less for the same amount of work. In this case, the creator is going sell less for the extra expense of buying premium animations, and the scripting time it takes to add the extras. It’s really not reasonable to call that “discrimination”. It’s not a case of offering the “exact same thing” for a different price to different markets. But for the amount of backlash the creator is getting, it would make sense to offer it as part of the PG package, and for one price, and just hope that increased sales over time will reward the time and cost.

    #10, I promise you, parterning with an alt does not always work. Especially for women. There are still plenty of people who will IM you and try to get in your pants even if you’re taken.     #15, while I do agree with what some others have said here, about there being more animations, thus a higher price, I also see your point that there is no alternative. Nobody thinks about the fact that gay people have to buy a bed with hetero animations that they might never use. I guess the thinking is that, in SL, everyone’s just fucking everyone so why not have ALL the options. But if you’re only looking for cuddles, can’t you make the normal PG one work? All you have to do is adjust the animations. Last I checked, gay people don’t have vastly different ways of cuddling with their partners than straight people do. I understand the sex is different, but the cuddles?

    • Sometimes editing the poses is more trouble than it’s worth. I personally just use whatever cuddle animations are available on the furniture I like and if we are clipping just witch to one that doesn’t clip so badly or not at all. I’m gonna miss going shopping at backbone but I can’t support their business practice after it was brought to my attention.

    • I make the separate, so there is a hetero version and a gay version. I dont want to charge extra for something people may only use half of.

    • Unfortunately there aren’t a lot of really nice gay bento animations for designers to work with. So unless you know someone that can make you your own animations to use in your furniture you’re stuck with only a dozen or so decent ones you can purchase to use. So your bed would end up with hardly anything in it at all & then people complain there aren’t enough animations.

  48. I agree with comments that extra added animations will mean as designers we put prices up on our furniture, that’s fair as it costs us to buy them.

    However, I can also understand peoples’ frustration at having to pay more JUST to get an LGBT version for 2 reasons:

    1. A lot of the gay versions use male / female animations as there are a limited number of true gay full perm animations so creators use straight ones but set them up using either 2 female avatars or 2 male avatars. So these additional gay versions maybe using some of the same animations that are in the straight version anyway, it is just the menus and animations are set up more for gay sex.

    2.They are paying for straight and gay animations when they might just want the gay version.

    This is why I do them separately – you can buy either the straight or gay male. The single sits are the same in both, but in both the PG and adult versions the cuddle and sex animations are set up for either straight or gay male. I also set up each new piece of furniture from “scratch”, so no two menus are the same, even if I reuse the same animations in different pieces of furniture, there will be some variation so the animations fit that piece of furniture. I dont charge extra because it’s an LGBT piece of furniture, I charge for the amount of work that goes into it (original mesh, template, textures AND animations). I also consider how much people might be willing to pay for furniture, it should be affordable, but still reflective of the work put into it.

  49. #23 – Spot on! As a proper, live DJ in SL, it really irks me when people steal sets from YouTube or Mixcloud and pass them off as their own. I know it happened to one supposedly SL famous DJ who played a stolen mix at a club and forgot to remove the other DJ’s ident from the mix. Personally, as someone who spends real money on buying the music I play and then spend hours carefully curating a DJ set to take my audience on a musical journey, I am glad someone else is fed up with these plagiarist fakes.

  55. #29: This one was a reach… Just like a good handful of secrets this week. (What’s going on? Are you guys all ok? Lol) That being said, I’m not going to waste this chance to mention Clover and their recent issues.

    They released a Bento animated particle spell HUD recently and depict it as having photo realistic flames (or close to it) in the vendor ad. In actuality, the particles are the default gradient LL particle blobs and look like hot ass instead of fire. On the bottom half of their ad, they write in small font that the flames don’t look like the ad. But then, why would you make your ad a lie like that if it doesn’t represent the literal only thing your product does?

    Of course, people came at the creator on their Flickr listing over this, angry and feeling they’d been misled. So the owner added a Facebook gallery after the fact showing what the particles looked like and told people they should have demoed the product. However they also deleted a lot of the angry and negative comments and left only more sympathetic ones. In particular, they deleted the comments of one woman who claimed she’d bought other products from Clover and they were also “not as advertised” and when she’d commented on those Flickr listings, the complaints were deleted there too.

    So this brings up some interesting points:
    1) Always demo everything when possible because people in SL have so many ways to be dishonest.

    2) Just because you put a small disclaimer on your ad doesn’t make your ad any less of a misleading trap if it doesn’t depict what you’re selling at all. It still looks really deceptive and makes you no better than people who use morphs to sell skins. You’re misrepresenting your work intentionally so it looks more appealing to buyers, otherwise you wouldn’t do it. If you have to essentially lie in your product image to make it look appealing, you’re doing something wrong.

    3) From one creator to another: If you make a mistake like this as a creator, for the love of God, don’t try to delete and hide the responses and/or alter it to look less bad for you than it was. That just makes it look 200% worse. If you have a lot of angry customers, and their responses aren’t completely irrational or they do have a good point, apologize for the issue and work on making it better. If you can’t in that instance, do it in your future products. That level of transparency and willingness to be responsible for your actions will help you in the long run.

    • So… they posted that the particles were not the same on the ad and posted a full gallery of the spells when people complained, and you are mad? I bought the spell system and I had no issue seeing the disclaimer. Where is the lie?

      • Using the disclaimer to go “oh well this makes it not a lie” is being disingenuous at best. While you’re technically correct, putting a disclaimer at the bottom of an ad that says the image is not an accurate representation does not mean the image isn’t initially misleading. The complaint is that the ad should never have been deceptive enough in the first place to need a disclaimer, and the intent behind using such an ad to attract business is what seems duplicitous. If you stand behind your product and what you offer, you shouldn’t have to display something else entirely in order to attract potential sales. You should be able to offer honest representations of your work.

        As for adding the gallery after complaints were made, that was the very least they could have done, but it was added with the comment that the gallery was to “clear up confusion” as their response to the criticism (other than “well there’s a disclaimer”). However the confusion was entirely the creator’s fault by using the ad that they did; something they fail to acknowledge. From a consumer standpoint, you can only gather this means they think that nothing was wrong with what they did.

        To make thing even more questionable, it would seem this isn’t their first foray into misleading advertisements for products (some without demos).         (And for those reading from the sidelines, this is not a case of “well they enhanced the image or used better models or photoshopped textures to look a little nicer.” The difference between ad and product is like night and day. I am surprised anyone still comes to Woodcrest, the management is practically non-existent, the admin team consists of the co-owners friends who aren’t even there half the time themselves(they must realise how shit it is.) Half the players on the sim don’t even know how to separate IC from OOC, they really think they’re livin’ their best lives as the “Queen Bee” where several guys acknowledge them. How thrilling.

    Most of the women are deluded and are desperately throwing themselves around at any guy that drops in for even a second. Single males don’t last very long at WC, but even the taken ones are still harassed by the post-menopausal women that inhabit the sim.

    The only roleplay that happens on this sim is chasing boys, so yeah not great if you actually want to create stories and actual character progression.

    If you’re looking for ACTUAL roleplay don’t come to WoodCrest. It’s an OOC dating hub full of thirsty bored post-menopausal housewives.

They don’t want to come listen to you loop the same synth stuff over and over for 20 minutes for one “song”. They want to come hear their favorite music, spiced with the flavor of the person playing it for them and to hear what other songs come to mind that fit well with that music. They come to dance, be social, and enjoy good music. If you think no work or effort goes into DJ’ing in SecondLife, you’re sorely mistaken. It takes time and effort to put together both themed and non-themed sets, make the music flow in a way that’s not jarring, and play to the crowd’s interests and preferences. Also, it costs money to host a stream on which to play that music. THAT’S why DJs and hosts ask for tips.

    • The amount of money I feed into Beatport to buy music to DJ with FAR outweighs the little I make as a DJ in SL but I carry on doing it, because I love sharing the music that I’m passionate about.

    • Im a dj in SL as well, i’ve never done a live gig at a real life venue because i don’t feel like im good enough, yes i use songs from youtube, yes i use songs from other websites like beatport, but i don’t push play and walk away from it. I use a Dj deck like may of the dj’s in world and mix the songs to make mashups. So im sorry to say mr ” i pay good money for my music and you are all fakes “, you need to get the fuck off your high horse, wait, your name isn’t paris by any chance is it?. I pay for my stream and i play the music and try to be entertaining on the mic, i don’t force people to listen and i don’t force people to tip me, but wheni do get a tip it feels nice to know that someone is finding me entertaining. I was a t a club the other day and the dj played the same loop for almost 30min, i ended up turning his stream off, yet he make almost 7k, why? because people enjoyed his mic presence and he was entertaining.

    • I stopped live mixing years ago because my listeners liked my more eclectic off the cuff playlist sets far better. 17 hours of sound-a-like synth, techno, house, industrial, where you can’t tell when one dj changes to another is boring and dull. Also yes, hosts keep things going when you’re too busy to interact, help set things up, promote and socialize. Tip the hosts and the DJ and the venue.

    • I think you missed their point. If you have shopped there, you know the PG item isn’t the issue. There is one Adult item, and one Adult + which includes lesbian/gay animations. The regular adult is just hetero. Thus, there is one adult for hetero, none for homosexuals, so anyone who wants the homosexual animations has to also fork out an additonal L$1000 for the Adult + version. If they offered an Adult hetero and an Adult homo, there wouldn’t be an issue. The designer could offer that without any added cost to themselves. So it’s not about being cheap, it’s about desiring equality.

      • The only extra cost would be time in doing a separate piece, but if they are the same textures, then its only in boxing up an additional piece of furniture and setting that up on caspervend etc. This doesn’t take long. It may also be more of a financial issue…. they can charge more because they have all versions in one piece of furniture, rather than doing 3 separate pieces and charging the same for each. Again, this is why I do mine separately, so people aren’t having to pay so much for something they might use (the straight menus).
