    Most, if not all video games have the character you play as at tops 60k polygons, it’s efficient, and with that low load on the system more elements can be added in elsewhere (there are differences now due to more powerful systems however being able to handle more polygon density).

    In Secondlife, lazy creators don’t optimize their mesh, they just keep subdividing and smoothing and end up with a product that’s only appropriate for high-grade CGI renders ((I’m looking at you Legacy, your bodies are the absolute worst offender in the bodysphere with Belleza right on your heels, GoogleDoc for technical info on all bodies https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1NOGNY9oGBf2ptTgVQftb387M5GuzEWcc-dRTNsr7r78/edit#gid=0 ))

    So until content creators wise the fuck up and start optimizing mesh, Secondlife will always have shit performance. Actually, no, a lot of that crap is already on the grid, so it’s probably already doomed.

    • It’s not LL’s or creator’s responsibilities to worry about your obsolete hardware; you’ve just mentioned the two best looking brands of bodies on the grid, no one’s gonna be shocked they have higher render weights. Their details in the meshes are unmatched. If we wanted to look like GTA 5 people we’d stick with the efficient but ugly Linden meshes.

    • Well you are kind of wrong about a lot of stuff here. First of all, how you get higher detailed characters in games with much less polys is due to advanced shaders, materials etc which SL does not have. Normal maps and spec maps that barely work in SL are essentially useless due to how they were implemented. Only a small fraction of population understands how they work and even smaller run the settings to see it. If 90% of SL can’t see the detail as a creator you can’t create relying on that.

      Now your point of a 60k polys body that has virtually no details, (I really don’t understand Be Less Ignorant’s comment on the details on them being “unmatched” lol what detail?) is valid. However poly count is the least of issues of these bodies, what hurts performance more is having 8 texture sheets on a single pair of pants or a table or a body (again creators have to do this, because if 1 brand does it, you have to as well to compete with it) Creators also can’t use detailed maps, advanced cloth shaders etc to even have the option of meeting 2020’s visual standards while keep render weight down. Again it’s down on LL.

      Your comment about CGI renders having highpolys kind of shows you really have no experience with CGI renders. In fact CGI renders tend to be low poly, you do a behind the scenes subdivisions only during renders, (specially if you are using displacement maps)

      Highest performance hits on SL is in this order Alphas/transparencies –> Number of draw calls (this is number “faces” or texture sheet each mesh has) —> Polys. (I’m not including animation, rigs and such, this is only from a modeling perspective.)

      Anyway with all that said, yes there are brands that do dumdass things, for example the 150k sweaters we see, there is no reason for that. There is no detail on those meshes that 30k wouldn’t deliver. However even if that creator did reduce their mesh from 150k to 30k, you wouldn’t help that much because they are using 4-5 texture sheets on a single sweater.

      • I don’t know, how about you line up Legacy Fem and/or Perky, Belleza Freya and/or Isis, and compare the details in the mesh to Maitreya or Slink? I mean feel free to bust out any much less supported bodies too; Lucybody and the new one by N-core (starts with a K?) look just like Maitreya, can even wear the same clothes, that I’ve seen. Unless you’re in that Skiing/bodybuilder fetish niche, you’re not going to see anything that compares, and even those are only from the tits down. Legacy and Belleza are the only bodies that don’t have shapeless tubes for arms, to start with. Lara arms look like bent fucking straws at the shoulder and elbow LOL

        Unless you are actually blind, I’m sure the details in the shoulders, hips, leg and arm muscles shapes, stomachs… basically everywhere there should be muscle definition on an actual human woman… will be obvious. Any body definition that isn’t baked on with a skin is a detail in the mesh. Not sure how much more clear “details in the meshes” can be, but here’s a bunch of explanatory words to help dumb that down for ya.

        If you actually think any of the mesh bodies, regardless of the brand has any “details” that justify the number of polys they have spent on it, you are absolutely clueless. Just adding subdivisions to a model doesn’t make it look better, these bodies only have primary shapes. Even then they have all got the basic anatomy of the primary shapes wrong as well. You do not need 60k polys to define your primary shapes. 8-10k is -more- than enough.If they had the secondary forms you would go up to 30-35k at most. For game models (or even VFX and CG renders) we only go up to secondary forms, the rest will come from normal maps (and displacement maps for VFX and CGI). Thus the comment “what details”? If you think the reason legacy and maitreya look better than some of the other bodies is because they have more polys, then you are pretty ignorant.

        On comments about “get a better pc” Currently I’m running 2 GTX 1080 cards, 64 GB of ram, and i7 intel at 3.6. I can run any game on the market at 50-60fps locked with 4k textures and maxed out. I go to a club on sl that has 20 avatars and start lagging. You are either a liar when you say you can go around on your super beast pc on sl and not lag, or you are way too stupid to realize when you are lagging and your fps is actually really low.

        I defend some of the higher poly content on SL because as a creator i understand how limiting it is, we do not have the tools here to get the detail we need while keeping render weights down. However I also don’t support the dumbass things like a 80k tris sweater with 8 textures on it.

        Hope this was dumbed down enough for you. Enjoy all those “details” on your mesh body lol.

        Let’s get the obvious out of the way, your specs, claiming you are running an “i7 intel at 3.6” is like saying you have a blue car, if you were 1/10 what you were projecting to be you’d know the model number by heart or at least look it up.
        2 GTX 1080 cards is for idiots since more often than not you are gonna get a degraded performance, not an improvement, besides number crunching, which you do not do, that’s for the less educated.
        64 GB of RAM, and? RAM is a cruel mistress, it has no impact on performance as long as you have enough of it, running SL even with your browser and photoshop open at the same time will hardly use 10-12 GB, you are getting no benefit in performance with the 64GB what so ever.

        With that out of the way, let’s tackle more of your erroneous claims, be them:

        No it isn’t.
        Alphas/transparencies are used the way they are because they are cheap, that is literally the reason they are used.
        When you get bugs out of layering transparencies, that’s a problem called ‘Sorting’ it is only a visual problem, i.e. it looks bad and thus video game developers avoid it like the plague, but these are amazingly computationally cheap.
        Calling it the highest performance hit comes from a deep place of ignorance, you can quite literally build 100 boxes on a row with an alpha channel and get no hit, even if you angle the camera to line them all up.

        Now between polygons vs textures.
        First of all no one half serious uses ‘polygons’ because a polygon can be 3 or 5 triangles for example depending on how you cut it, so we use triangles instead.
        Second, textures is the wrong nomenclature, call it what it is, diffuse maps.
        Now between the two which has a bigger performance impact? Triangles.

        LL in their infinity wisdom saw fit to pull back support from 2048×2048 to a 1024×1024 max, now, are they over used and abused still? They absolutely are and a lot of improvement could be made in that area.
        But they are not by any stretch of the imagination bigger performance hit compared to over use of triangles.
        I’ll get to LODs in a second, for now when you have triangles that are smaller than a pixel on your screen, you get what is called Over Shading, that is when your system starts doing a lot of useless calculations, and THAT is the biggest performance impact on SL.
        The problem with SL is the algorithm that is used to calculate the Land Impact hands out low numbers to badly made LODs.
        So content creators will put too many triangles on LOD0, then too few on LOD1 and then almost or literally none in LOD2 and LOD3. They then ask the users to bumper their LOD factor up to 8+ which thankfully meanwhile FS cut back to 4 on relog, yet still 4 is way too high which means the viewer will be using LOD0 on too great of distances causing massive Over Shading problems.

        Now here’s your homework:
        Do the aforementioned 100 boxes in a row lined up with an alpha channel. Angle your camera so they line up.
        Note your performance.
        The legacy bodies are up to 800k triangles, but a full avatar that includes all the other parts is easily 2-3 million if not more, so get about 3 million triangles worth of mesh objects around.
        Make sure they are mod, and because this is classic SL they will over use texture memory too, perfect for our experiment, measure how much total texture memory they are using, this will include diffuse, spectacular and normal.
        Note your performance.
        Now replace all the textures with the Blank 32×32 default, and none for specular and normal.
        Note your performance.
        Now start building enough basic boxes so that you can have as many textures on them to match the previous experience, do it roughly by number and by memory use.
        Note your performance.

        Now compare your notes. When did you had the worst performance? I’ll spoil it for you:
        When you had high triangle count and high texture memory use.
        Then when you had high triangle count and low texture memory use.
        Then when you had low triangle count and high texture memory use.

        Conclusion of the experiment:
        Objects with alpha channels aren’t the biggest computational weight, even when massively over used.
        High triangle count is far heavier than high texture memory use.

        Congratulations, you learned something.

A lot of decor peeps use the full perm plant meshes, given how much of a huge pain in the ass it is to make plants, and for many events the use of said plants doesn’t violate the full-perm rule.
