    • Well, you fall in love with what you see and hear. I have a couple times. I can understand it to a degree. People say the right things, are always there, other things etc etc. It can pull you in. It’s easier to talk to someone online than real life for many, sometimes it’s even physically safer lol

      Some people, manipulate this and you. You then find out that it’s not what it seems. Other people, it turns into RL later. A lot of people are long distance.

      What’s most important here when it comes to online relationships is to know what you are getting into. Sure, some guy may come sweep you off your feet online with the right words, but no, you dont know them. But you also don’t know anyone from the grocery store, post office, parkinglot or an online dating site like e-harmony. People fall into a trap of over belief in the person they are interested in.

      Some people are in a bad place, like I was when I met a guy, who later went from SL to RL with meeting. He played it well, both places. It was hard to not fall into it. Wrong situations can happen anywhere. People are human, they do feel.

      This is why, I tell people to find their self worth about relationships. SL relationships have gone to real life, 2 of my good friends who are from 2 different countries have been married a couple years now and are happy. Many though, find out the person they were with were not what they seemed, a lot of it goes into verbal/emotional abuse by the other.

      Feelings happen but people need to protect themselves more and not fall into the belief in just a matter of days or weeks that this person is who they say they are and can be trusted. It’s how you go about it that matters, what happens on SL most of the time.. isn’t good.. it’s sad to watch

      I wont get into online relationships again, in fact I’ve decided even to avoid it as much as I can in real life mostly due to past abuse (some super serious abuse too). People in GENERAL, can be bad. Not all online relationships are bad.

While you may have 60+ avi’s on the sim, only 2 or 3 actually are present. Smaller clubs are so much better because that’s where people are more active & have a hell of a lot more fun. Sad when a host/dj at AEG/Exhale make maybe 1,000L a shift yet a smaller more active club a host/dj can make well over 3,000L easy if not more with 100% of the tips going to the person doing the work.

Been in and out of SL since the beginning. “Clubs” like that in SL are only there for a popularity contest and care nothing about the people who tend to go once in a while. You just need to explore the world of SL is all. I’m sure all clubs have had bots at times to increase their traffic which is sad, but not all of them have avi’s that just stand there and do nothing all the time.

    • idk i understand ur view 100% on #8 but i see it useable in rp.. i too have lost way too many friends to OD’s but i think it kind of creates extra awareness.. sometimes people need the visual to understand it. Its not really mocking it.. i see it no different than a movie prop when people actually role play the right way… or even create flickr pics.       • I have to respectively disagree with you. I would never RP a terminal cancer patient or a person with MS. I believe that is crossing the line. I don’t think the creator was mocking anyone. I just think that they did not take into the perspective of how it looks like to people with addiction issues. That is the one thing that us addicts cannot convey to people is knowing what the grip of addiction is. If there was a way to have people feel just for a day, the torturous mental hell that is addiction they would be able to see why this is a bit questionable.

      • They have a commercial on lately (depending on where you are) very sad and painful to watch .. about a girl detoxing live on a billboard type screen i believe in times square for people to watch. People don’t view it as a tv show.. they’re able to see the pain it causes to the person so hopefully people think twice (which is why the girl agree’d to do it and have it air.. she’d rather show people the pain it caused her without others having to go through it.) . One week on here someone was upset because a creator made cut marks for arms.. I had that specific issue when i was a teen and again i wasn’t bothered at all that someone created it in sl. I think certain things are just part of us and our pasts.. hopefully overcome or on the way to it.. but its healthy to bring it to light.
        I mean my mom quit smoking after like 30 years but shes still able to sit in the back yard while my uncles smoke.
        anyways i get the questionable part and don’t mean to rant.. i respect why your not feeling it..i just think its more healthy to have things brought to the light because triggers will always be everywhere.. thats why an addict will always be in recovery even if they no longer are using..
        i believe addiction is a disease but its also a choice.. i mean cancer is kind of different.
        i lost a best friend to a heroin overdose who i loved like family but he would never had the disease if he didn’t pick up the shit. =/

      • I think with the addiction issue there is a weird line in the sand when it comes to opiates vs. alcohol. Like when people mention heroin, they all have that visual of needle in arm. No one wants to think they would ever do that, but that actually happens ALOT more after prescription pills are administered by a doctor. The majority of heroin users started off with something “legal” that was prescribed to them and then go to heroin. So when people say “it’s a choice”, taking that pill is…..but the addiction is not a choice. With drinking our “drug” is legal and everywhere. It’s promoted and commercialized and made to look pretty. It’s use to help celebrations, life events…..etc. I think the only people who can understand that are people in recovery. When people get past the stigma of the “junkie” label and see that addiction is affecting everyone *doctors, lawyers, nurses, child care workers….etc are all these people just make a bad choice? Or maybe when we realize that the addiction is not a choice that we can start to change the statistics.

      • Yeah I’m siding with AbFab with this. It’s something in the person’s brain chemistry. Either you have the potential to become addicted or you don’t, it’s a medical thing and we have no way to test to find out ahead of time.

      • I think (not a medical expert, not a lawyer, just watched almost all the episodes of intervention) it’s a spectrum. Some actually have other mental health issues (bipolar seems to be common) and they find drugs and use them to make them feel “normal?” but get addicted because the body does get addicted. Others have the genetic makeup to have the potential to be addicted. Throw in others I’m not writing a dissertation but you get the idea. This is why I think AA works for some (abstinence and the sponsor support and group accountability) yet others require rehab with mental health treatment. It’s one area of medicine/healthcare that I’d love to see get more attention as it requires more than just toss someone to this one treatment and then let them try to swim. Either way just a long post to say I agree with more thoughts.

      • that’s not creating awareness it’s objectifying their pain. ‘the visual to understand’.. the visual is reality, no picture will convey that despair. who exactly are we creating awareness for by posting a picture, its for the likes or wtv. those that care will care and those that do not will not no matter how much ‘awareness’ you think you’re touting. i doubt the person that made that was ever in that situation because they would not attempt to make money off of it and would see the wrong in doing this.

        These topics and themes have been in SL for a long time. This is not some new concept to be outraged over. People will roleplay/fantasize/whatever about many dark topics because they are exactly that. It’s not just about a shallow edginess or aesthetic all the time. These problems exist and lend to (oftentimes) more mutil-fasceted conversations either about the topic or in roleplay; and no amount of treating them with kid gloves is going to change that.

        We are surrounded in RL with glorification and/or use of these topics in media constantly. I just think it’s a bit of a slightly indefensible outrage to suddenly expect it to vanish on a platform you happen to use frequently.

    • Honestly, there are many things that people are addicted to; sex, shopping, drugs, food… you can’t sit and complain about one person’s decision to make something just because you yourself are triggered in some way. Everyone has something that bothers them but that doesn’t mean that others should restrict their creative flow or even their likes and dislikes in favour of someone else’s opinion or issues. As long as it’s not physically hurting you, then you shouldn’t care. And sure, you could say, “Oh, but I have people and such in my life, or I, myself have gone through X, Y and Z” which is fair. But it’s also fair to just walk away and ignore it. If you have problems, handle them. But don’t expect someone to limit their own likes to fit everyone else’s. Sometimes people forget this is a game in a sense and throwing facts and quotations into something that’s clearly not promoting RL drug abuse or anything of the sort aside from immersive and realistic RP is doing nothing more than wasting your time. Everyone now days is ‘triggered’ at everything and everyone is becoming numb to more creative ideas and things whilst assuming that people mean the worst. I’m pretty sure the creator knows what goes into the situation of heroin and its abuse and in his own way is bringing awareness of it… or just decided to make it because he wanted to.     • First, what does roleplaying a drug addiction of such magnitude has heroin that has ruined people’s lives and that of their family have to do with finding love in SL. Which is a virtual platform game where the end user can do whatever they fucking want in the game, which also includes finding real life or not.     #49 Phil has long been known as the biggest egomaniac in SL. I have seen first hand how he treats people including his own staff. It amazes me that anyone would still work for this fool or go to any of his clubs.

    • Ego much, you obviously don’t know statistics at all. See its bots vs real people. Phil may have 4 clubs but they have real traffic no alts no bots. unlike most of the big clubs in sl. Trust me on this, I know the program exhale uses for their alt parade, its not real traffic, so keep exhaulting the clubs that have “more people” hit up some of the regulars sometime, see if they actually reply.

    • I know a DJ that spins at Rez – he’s one of the first to admit that Phil is a dick.

      Also LOLForever at Grind’s numbers. The last time I was at Grind, there was like 5 people there tops plus the DJ and two airhead dancers. One of those audience members was a newbie that kept running into people and being a general jerk. Grind is supposed to be geared towards couples – DJs are supposed to play “romantic” tunes. It’s a joke. No one that was there had a date, and one of the people in the audience was more than likely an alt of the dancers. But sure, be proud of those numbers there when the majority of them are staff – who are they really fooling by having two girls up on the stage shaking their pixels around? They’re not even removing their clothes. Do they really need staff to hit a button for gestures in chat and to tell the audience to tip the DJ – especially more than one person?

        I also can concur that the “dancers” at AEG are alts and bots. Attend a few sets and open up their profiles and notice how they all have only just AEG information and associated groups listed in them. Considering also how many of them only use gestures to communicate in local, it’s nearly a guarantee that someone is logging into more than one account at the same time and can’t keep up on the chat or care to do so. That wouldn’t be you, would it, Phil?

      • fact is yes phil can be a total assbag, so are some managers, but most EX AEG dancers and djs run back to him and ask for there jobs back. they have djs that mix and not youtube tunes. same as dancers there are some lazy fuckers up there that only gesture or don’t even speak proper english. But he also have dancers that chat and hardly use a gesture , same people come back to the clubs because they like the place , the djs maybe even a dancer. Now what i don’t get is this. if you don’t like phil and his club then just don’t go there , go to where you do like to hang and enjoy your SL time.

    • I’ve been to REZ a few times, but had to stop going as the hosts (especially) were morons who only used Gestures. The conversations in local were asinine, and most of the people who went were clones of each other. Ick. No personalities whatsoever. I’ll stick to smaller clubs, thanks. At least their hosts and DJ’s actually talk with real words and not stupid gestures. Fuck you if you can’t type out a simple Hello and Thank you for your tip!

  66. It’s a choice to take the first hit/drink but the addiction is never a choice. No one ever chooses that. I know that does not offer comfort to you in any way, but I think one of the ways society can beat addiction is to be truthful about it. A lot of what is understood about it / portrayed is completely wrong.

  67. its a choice yes… but turns to a disease when you need actual help to stop doing it.. its sad because once it becomes something you can’t stop is when its not even fun to do.. same as getting high.. i’ve tried many things sometimes more than once but it becomes a disease when ur no longer getting high and its fun instead ur only doing it so your not sick. =/
    comparing to cancer was bananas though.. i mean people who get cancer did nothing to deserve it

  68. addiction is a disease, yes you chose to start it but addiction is real. I have a mother that I grew up with who was severely druggy and everyone around us were into drugs an alcohol. Everyone in my family except me has overdosed more than once. My mom sobered and was an RA in a drug rehab for women and their children. There is a big mental side of addiction too.

    I’m a child of abuse too, but I get it. It sucks and we have to deal with it the rest of our lives, doesn’t change the fact that it IS a disease. I’m the only one in my family, that hasn’t become that. One thing I’d suggest, is getting some help to cope. Nothing wrong with therapy, I had to swallow my pride and deal with the PTSD of it. If you don’t, it just continues to eat you and the abuse will have more power over you. How you handle it, is the choice.

  69. I was never asking for anyone to feel sorry for me, none of us in recovery would do that. You don’t have to think it’s a disease and you don’t have to think it’s not a choice. I think when you look at the statistics of who is becoming addicts now and days, and get past the “junkie” label/////you will see that doctors, lawyers, police officers….etc never make that choice either. Trying to say that all of these people actively signed up for it just does not make sense.

  70. The mental side of it is huge. That is one of the things that scares the shit out of people who are looking to get into recovery/sobriety. The realization that you HAVE to deal with the mental stuff and that pops up really quick. I have numerous outlets to continue my sobriety and talk to my therapist to cope with the mental stuff. I agree there is nothing wrong with therapy, if anything I think everyone should see a therapist. They are wonderful professionals who I personally find allow me to totally look at things in a different light.

  71. Yup, Therapy is nothing to be afraid of. It took a long ass time for me to give into it. It’s even harder actually talking to one once you are there. That’s something they can help with too

  72. I had to change therapists once cause the guy looked like Leslie Neilson from the Naked Gun movies. It’s hard to talk about life stuff with Frank Drebin.

  73. therapy is great when you can find one that meshes well with you.. where im from majority of therapy isn’t covered by medical to begin with..or they have cheesy ones that really don’t even pay attention..
    i even have a doctor who i haven’t seen in a year she literally texts me to ask if i need refills.
