Also, with regards to child avatars. I don’t personally assume they’re all doing immoral things. However, no matter how I try to wrap my head around it I still feel there has to be some mental health issues going on in order for an adult to want to consistently play a child avatar/character online. Often for hours at a time.

What a lot of people here don’t seem to realize, is that this group of people (the site readers) they’re made up of a SMALL portion of sl. Bloggers/designers. You’re talking about a group of maaaaaaybe 500 people. Most of SL doesn’t shop at our stores, they don’t read out blogs. Most of SL is still stick in 2009, with their system layers, prim hair and bling. Most of SL is here for sex. Just because YOU and YOUR FRIENDS aren’t, doesn’t mean that most of SL isn’t a really fucked up place.

Funny how weird sex RP Sims are accepted, and a grownup playing a child isn’t.
All the child avi’s I met were nice friendly and polite, things as Gorean and forced sex in a virtual world I rather see disappear from Second Life.
I don’t play Second Life for sex, in fact I don’t even *have* sex in SL. I play it because it’s like a glamorized form of playing with a paper doll (that might be before your time, but google it). I get to dress up cute (where dress size and money are no objects, and I can try styles I would never dare IRL), I get to have a beautiful home and decorate it however I want – and redo it all the next week. I love the job I do in SL because it’s challenging, it utilizes my skills like attention to detail, and I get to discover a lot of new stores and idea through it. I love listening to live music, and I love goofing off with friends. Sometimes I run around in a hamster avatar just to make people laugh. Sometimes I put on my riding outfit and go find an open sim to ride my horse around.
When people say “SL is just about sex,” I think, have you ever *been* in SL? There’s a lot more to it than that!
Oh and yeah, the fact that the Gor lifestyle is so popular and widely tolerated, even if not outright condoned, is what creeps me out. Glorified slavery and rape and misogyny and sexsexsex… nobody ever makes secrets on here about how weird *that* is, but you’ll rant until you’re blue about how weird families are? That’s pretty messed up.

Well actually, people do know about my child avatar and when I talk about Second Life, I do tell them about my experience of being adopted into a family and anyone who knows me knows that my SL family is a big part of my life. I’ve met some wonderful people whom I care about and talk to in RL as well, they make their way into my conversations frequently because they’re part of my life. Then again, the friends and family I have know I’m a roleplayer and asexual and they also know I was severely emotionally abused by my mother. They may not all understand why I play a child but they sure as hell know there is nothing perverted or sexual about any of it. If anything, they’re more likely to think it’s an excuse to be childish rather than therapy or an escape from our highly sexualized society it actually is. And hey, the secret said child avatars and the people playing them are creepy, not boning Big Bird for fun and secretly pedophiles. Creepy I can deal with. I’m sure the people you know and trust and the people who understand you are accepting, because they love you unconditionally. But I doubt you’d tell work colleagues in a professional capacity, I know you don’t have to tell anyone, but I’m just saying, most wouldn’t get it. The fact that this child porn has been an issue in SL can’t be denied, it has and it has led to child AV’s not being allowed to access parts of the grid.

That’s a bit of a trapping statement, because in all honesty, most of us wouldn’t tell work colleagues about our SL avatars at all. I for one have not and would not. Not because I’m ashamed of my avatar or what I do while in SL (and I don’t have a child avatar), but because I don’t want to hear comments like “you do what?” followed by weird looks.
And what about those of us who are completely non-sexual/asexual and play children specifically to get away from the sexual side of Second Life all together? Yes, I’m a grown woman but I feel very uncomfortable as an adult avatar in many places because of the large number of people who play SL for sex and assume everyone else is just like them. Running around as an age appropriate dressed eight year old completely frees me from dealing with sexual people and if, linden forbid, one does decide to be sexual towards my kid avatar – I can report them because it’s against TOS. No one is going to defend them or see it as normal, especially since my child avatar looks like a child, acts like a child, and dresses like a child.

I remember VH1 or something similar doing a little expose on SecondLife many many years ago, and they focused on a man who had a large SL family, and the only real purpose was for creepy sex. Clearly not all child avis are doing this, but when stuff like that gets air on national television, you can’t really blame people for having views like that.

I’ve met several people who play girl avatars in SL and none of them are male IRL. The one boy avatar I know is played by a male IRL. Dunno why you assume everyone’s a “40 year old man”…
I couldn’t do the kid RP thing myself (especially since TD makes it basically toddlers or adults, you rarely see kids in between), but from what I’ve seen of the kid RPers I’ve met… it often seems to stem from a RL need, like a woman who can’t have children will adopt in SL, or a woman whose childhood was horrible will try to have a happier one in SL. I’m not going to pass judgment on whether that’s a healthy way to meet those needs or not, I really don’t know, however I do think that for most people it has *nothing* to do with sex. The people I personally know who RP kids would be furious and disgusted if you suggested that to them.

I think the people that are bothered so much by child avatars have their mind set to one thing. We all know what that thing is. What they don’t realize is that most people that prefer to use a child avatar aren’t doing those things. So, the real question is, to those of you that have such an issue with it… why do you automatically think of that one thing when you see a child avatar? Is there something wrong with you?
I have no clue what ‘most people with child avs’ are doing in private, and I also have no idea how anyone else would have access to this information, since a) nobody can know exactly how many of the child avs they know are alts of each other and b) nobody can know exactly how many of the child avs of their acquaintance have secret alts.
I’m glad I don’t have that kind of omniscience, to be honest.
