#14. Story time: I’m a performer on SL as well as RL. My avatar is made in my RL image, from my looks to my eclectic and maybe terrible fashion choices. Restrictive but I just like it that way for personal preference and career purposes. I became friends with a woman who is affiliated with a venue where I performed and even joined as a guest to support other performers. So this women didn’t give off the best energy but I looked past it. I found out she was saying a lot of mean spirited things behind my back but in a subtle, kind of passive aggressive way. I shrugged it off and distanced myself. She would get mad if mutuals spent time with me. She would tell lies about me. I’m confused at this point because why is she doing this to me? I had always been nice to her. She didn’t think that I knew and she thought her subtlety was her cover. So she starts transforming her avatar’s appearance. She had gone from a blonde to a strawberry blond and finally a fiery redhead like me. Coincidence maybe, I mean it’s not like I own the hair color. She started to dress like me and accessorize like me. Even those hard to find pieces, she would have after seeing me with it. Weird but it’s not exclusive so no big deal right? Dear Post 14, Make your own shit. Stop shopping at the same events and stores as every other basic broad. Learn how to make mesh and do your own thing. That is what second life used to be all about that. Yea, they had stores back then.. but people made their own shit to look unique. So the stores weren’t all that important as they are now.
Since this comment on a “secret” actually has an attempt to be useful in it, I chose to split it out. 18 – I was staff at a short-lived sales event a couple of years ago. I’d check “original mesh” items for fibbers and frauds, among other duties. When I see someone accuse a person of copy-botting full perm items based on visual evidence alone, I think of it. Because I could tell you in less than two minutes if the accused is lying or not. I offer this advice to anyone wondering if someone’s stealing or fibbing. Copybotting used to be easier to see. I’m not going to touch that here. I’m not up on the tells for botting vs other methods of deception. 1) Go to the store selling the item you think is stolen. 2) Find a copy of it on the sales floor. Furniture stores usually do this. It may not work so well if it’s a temp rez thing, but it’s worth a shot. 3) Type Ctrl-3 to open your Tools window to the Edit option. 4) Click the item you’re wondering about. You’ll see creator and two owner options under its name on the first tab of the window. Odds are it’ll say the owner is creator. To be expected at this point. 5) Check “Edit linked items” in the field over the item name. Yes, it works if you don’t own it, because you want info that isn’t protected by ownership or access privileges. 6) Click the item again. The info will change to tell you the name of the individual mesh item and its creator/owner info. 5) As someone in their early twenties, who makes a majority of my income from creating in SL, it has actually freed up my life to enjoy it more. I’m even one of the smaller brands. Imagine what the big brands with young <30yo creators are making! I only have to work my part time job 18 hrs a week. And I create on my own schedule, some weekends I don’t even touch my computer because I’m out living my life with all my free time. Sick for 2 days? Guess what, Still made money.
True, this takes time to get to this point, but these skills can be used across multiple platforms. They are worth the learning and effort. Don’t discourage others from pursuing virtual work. The people online on a daily basis like to spend linden and enjoy the platform, who cares about their personal lives? Sounds kinda judgy from someone whos also been online since at least 2007.
This post sounds more like someone who can’t create a healthy life/SL balance or feels threatened by all the new, fresh faces who are ready to learn new skills to profit from. Honestly, even if making stuff for SL wasn’t profitable on its own (it’s not for a lot of people who make more niche stuff,) it’s still a great way for people to have a hobby and develop new skills while doing things that they enjoy. Those skills being usable elsewhere is an added bonus. I personally know a bunch of people who started making mesh, animating, texturing, or scripting on SL and went on to get game dev jobs irl because they learned it was their passion.
Yeah, OP of #5 obviously didn’t see the numbers on the Bonnie Bots page for SL sales before they got taken down. There are plenty of people in SL making serious bank, a whole lot more making enough money to supplement their main income, and some of them are definitely not retirement age. I’d dearly love to create clothing in world, but my capacity to learn all of the required software and skills is limited.
I’m really curious as to how much shape stores make considering making shapes is probably the least amount of effort in SL. Several shape stores have been around a long time, but they have to buy every body and head to make shapes for them, so what kind of profit do they turn?

As much as I hate boxed demos, apparently it’s the fault of at least one of the vending systems that they’re so common, not creators deliberately making more work for themselves by boxing things up for no reason. Whichever one it is requires things to be boxed to deliver. However, sometimes I get DOUBLE boxed demos, which usually make me rez the first box on the ground to get a second box, and there’s no excuse for that at all.
Also, if you make an outfit with multiple pieces released at the same time, it’s incredibly annoying to have each piece in its own boxed demo. Just make one box with all the pieces please, any creators who are reading this.
