#49 – I am a creator and events are demanding more and more money from creators, and there are fewer and fewer buyers at their events… As a result, creators are leaving some events and prefer to turn to the so-called “weekend sales”. It is certainly true that for “fake creators” who rely on a mesher to create their clothing, they will be at a loss in weekend sales because mesher services require certain compensation, which goes without saying. However, a creator who creates everything themselves will clearly be much more profitable with weekend sales, provided that they offer quality.
#49 As a creator this is such a difficult subject and something I think about often. Firstly, the market is wayyyy too saturated with both monthly and weekend sales events. To the point where the SL consumer has become overwhelmed on what to look at and where to spend their money. Seraphim pretty much has no standards for which events they’ll promote since it’s all $$$ to them. (as long as it doesn’t severely violate TOS i.e. Cakeday event which is why you’ll never see it or similar promoted on there) The reason everyone and their SL mother wants to come up with a weekend sales event these days is because it’s all gravy for those who run these events. Take SoKawaiiSundays for example (owned by Velour and one of the greediest event owners of them all) they charge creators 1500L per week to participate in what is essentially a 1.5 day event. At 65L per item you basically need to sell 24 of those sale items to even just make your $$ back. But Velour? They are profiting big time from it at 1500L x 80+ creators every week? They only need to pay maybe 10K max for advertising so their profits are over 90%. These sales events are made to make money off creators and sure creators can choose to not participate but we all know how that goes. I’ve resigned to only participating in weekend sales 1-2 times per month which is working out better than when I was a very new brand participating weekly and losing $$.
Seraphim offers basic coverage for free to any event that applies for it. That’s why they seem to have “no standards”; not because they’re getting paid by those crappy low-end events/sales. I hear they’re miserable to work for, but without them many events/sales would never reach any audience at all. I do agree there are too many weekend sales, but this happens when the big ones limit participation; of course people are going to create another sale, rather than just go without. I often see SKS items out all weekend, though; just because it’s called a Sunday event, it doesn’t limit you to Sunday, and the list for it even comes out on Saturday. You can also promote the item through your own channels like store group/Flickr.
At least you hit the nail on the head there at the end- you certainly don’t have to participate, as a creator. The vague consequences of not doing so that you hinted at must mean that ultimately, participation is a net gain, despite your saltiness about the money being made by the event coordinators. Hey, you could always start your own sale and get a chunk of that change! As someone who has been involved in trying to organize groups of people on a schedule in SL before- good fucking luck. It’s some thankless bullshit.
Sure! I keep my sale items out all week because many people who have an RL are busy on the weekends and can’t get to it in time. In fact the stores who remove the sales at 12:01AM on Monday are only preventing themselves from getting more sales and annoying shoppers. I agree Seraphim has done wonders for the shopping world of SL and sure they offer free coverage however they are making a pretty penny via paid advertisements and many events do opt for paid advertisements to boost themselves to the top and sides of the page so it’s not all free but I get the point you were making. 😉 And yes running events is quite the nightmare unless you’re making enough to pay out someone else to coordinate it for you. And yeah, massive saltiness towards SKS since they charge more than most weekend sales events yet have awful awful support for creators when you have a question and neverrr do boosted ads like how the other events do. They also send 1-2 notices to the creator group daily encouraging them to sign up = $$$ (Even at 6pm on sundays when the current sale isn’t even over lol) When I say advertising cost I probably should have said overhead instead since they really don’t care to spend anything on that, just the team who assists them with coordinating.

#49: You realize you are falling into the US marketing gimmick right? There are at least two types of customer: Customer 1: Wants the new fashion in the moment. Because it’s on trend, it’s seasonal, and thus you want the item to be there from the event. You will pay full price on maybe 1-3 colors. You will wait for a sale for the rest. Customer 2: Wants the fashion or item but doesn’t have the funds or doesn’t want to spend them. They wait it out until there is a sale. That being 6 months or a year. They will in turn buy the fatpack when it’s on sale. Customer 3: A mix of the above. Depending on what you are buying. People complain about creators but the fault is on the buyers. You don’t want people to go for sales, don’t buy in the weekend sales. If you don’t want them to go to events, don’t buy in the events. They get into the events because that’s unfortunately a way of getting a large amount of people through a particular area which yields sales. Yes, it yields them because we unfortunately are lazy shoppers in SL. We rather page through Seraphim and select four or five items and then go to an event than have a list of stores and chase them through SL. Yes, I get the concept that it’s hard in SL to find items in general. The store description pages suck, the marketplace indexing sucks (partially due to people using dumb filters). But, let’s face it. We created our own mess. I submit a 4th type of customer…. it’s type 1 but then they forget they ever bought the item until they see it on sale months later and go to buy it but the vender refunds them saying they already own it, thus leaving the customer to question their life choices for only a moment because they just saw something else that was super cute from that store at another event…

That one falls under customer #2 or #3. And this depends if they used the item. They make the mistake once, and then either go to #2 or #3. This means they bought the item because of the rush. Therefore, they usually adapt to that.
SL is not a big deal, I’ve seen those that make the mistake in RL! Imagine buying a cashmere sweater to realize you have the same color.
oh i thought it would have been obvious but its me… i’m the one. i have an inventory full of things i have never used or worn. i have a folder of things i haven’t even opened yet (in my defense, those are 100% “gift” items and primarily from the novel inc events). i even have a folder of hundreds (dare i say thousands (dont judge lol)) of gachas from before the ban that i simply cant be bothered to list on mp bcs they make the process tedious and annoying. it’s not that i buy them to be on trend or anything remotely similar… i see it, i like it, i buy it, half the time i never use it. or use it once and store it for months until i think of it again. The moment she started her own sim, she suddenly made it public and willingly drove a nail in the coffin of BoTS. Around that same time, a recording purportedly came out on which Unicorn is making fun of BoTS players. I don’t know about you, but I haven’t heard this recording or heard of anyone that has. Coincidence?
While BoTS may be a mess, an even worse one than RoC and CoB, it’s important to have healthy competition to keep the genre evolving and improving. Sabotaging each other isn’t the way to go.
Start holding these people accountable for their actions because if they’re willing to do that to their friends, who knows what they’ll do to you, the players.

As far as being about the money, every designer, every DJ, every escort, and every person that works inside second life is about the money. Most of them pay for sims, and clubs and make the things that people in sl use, so being about the money, at least she has a work ethic. And everyone enjoys free, so if they can get it for free, they would, but there’s very little that I’ve ever seen Rose get for free, even the free things have to be earned in some way. People break up all the time, just this one has turned into let’s trash my ex and punish her in the court of public opinion. Always remember, there are 3 sides to every story, and the truth is often the first casualty in a war. Maybe you should actually talk to Rose and see what her side is, or judge her and slander her and hide who you are while you try to destroy her because that’s the chicken shit kind of person you are.

49 – i said this a while back on this topic and got downvoted considerably. when your customer is trained to pay the low price (be it gacha or weekend sale), they’re not going to bother paying the full price. this is why people hold out for a bigger sale (shop & hop discounts, black friday or holiday sales). now with weekend sales you don’t have to wait quite as long. it’s great for consumers but terrible for creators. having to churn out work month after month for events (not our fault. their choice) only to sell it at a fraction of the cost at a weekend sale isn’t worth it.

Not true. If the items are good quality, I will always go back and buy more things at full price if they fit my style and budget. That’s why Ison and Kunglers gets most of my linden dollars. I know I’m not the only one who discovered great designers via the weekend sales and then went back to buy more at full price.
Now if they’re just crap template stores, sure. I’m not going to pay full price for a template item unless they offer a HUD with a large number of texture options. That’s still a rare occasion though. Hilly Haalan uses templates, but she offers a lot for a reasonable price at her regular store prices. Purple Moon also uses templates, but her textures are always great. I don’t consider their stores crap stores, but we all know the stores that show up in the second tier weekend sales (the ones I won’t bother to open on Seraphim) whose things all look the same (like that gun shoved down in a thong).
sorry i was specifically referring to the customer that is trained to pay a low price. that specific type of customer has it in their heads that this is what the product is worth and only wants to pay that low price for anything. it’s definitely not every customer that acts this way. my bad, i should have made that clear.
and yes i do agree with you with regards to quality. i don’t mind paying full price on an item (even if it’s a template) if the quality is good and its a brand that i know puts out decent stuff. dont get me wrong, i don’t think weekend sales are bad but it definitely seems like they picked up as soon as gacha died. there’s creators i’ve only seen on weekend sales but never in an event heh.

I was in the same boat. Yu and Sig used to play my SL parents. Which was super nice, I loved the time we spent together. But it really hurt me when stuff went downhill for absolutely stupid reasons. Jules I met briefly. I don’t know him well. When we spent time together, the four of us, it was fun and chill. Only after our ways parted and Yu treated me really shitty for being autistic, Jules insulted me, which I did not expect to happen. I had no idea of the new accounts or how they treat other people.
I always beat myself up mentally for the situation over the past months, because I thought I had done something wrong. Now realizing that I was gas-lit makes a lot more sense.

33. There is no point in making lower than medium LODs for rigged mesh because of a bug that doesn’t even display them (unless you’re using developer tools to test the LODs). You end up with higher upload cost/complexity rating for no gain whatsoever. This has been a known issue for years. Optimization in SL is a race to the bottom.

Some might have never known. Help them find out with tutorials, guides, videos. . . there are loads about creating things but none about optimizing for games like SL. Hi! I’ve been reaching out to many designers for many years to try to encourage better practices. Many creators have reached out to me for the same reason.
I have provided personally tailored tutorials, links to very helpful tutorials, snippets of 3d curriculum, constructive criticism, enthusiastic support etc etc.
I cannot say that a single one of those creators has made an effort to better themselves or even take any extra effort to educate themselves in this skill area, even with direction and help spanning over several years.
The unfortunate reason for this is the easiest way is not the best way, but money talks. Creators do have access to this support and know where to go, who to ask and what to google. They just don’t see the benefit to it because it adds time and reduces their profit.
The second thing is the fact that a lot of creators are no longer singular people, they are either a figure head paying freelance artists a pittance and WILLINGLY ASKING THEM to INCREASE their mesh densities just because “Everyone else is doing it”
OR
They’re buying their mesh from artstation as a dense .obj, not processing it and getting someone to quickly copy weights so they can spit out the fastest thing possible.
The customer has no care for this, the creator gets your money quicker and with less effort.
I’d say that’s pretty lazy. There are very good creators making efficient items but they’re often drowned out or bypassed by the “Zara” type brands who aren’t personally doing the work and have several artists on hand to spit out double or triple the output.

i think a lot of these high poly meshes are just bought from turbosquid and are not optimized for SL at all, they are not “designers” if they are just buying someone else’s shit and uploading it to SL.the solution is to make their own meshes instead of buying 3D files meant for renders.
Except most of the “creators” will ignore you or straight up block you, no matter how nice and unbothering you will try to be when offering to show them some tricks, and explaining why a 300k triangles hair bell might not be a good idea
There’s actually quite a few tutorials on how to do everything you described on YouTube; there’s absolutely nothing stopping them from googling them, watching them, and then putting those skills into effect.
So really, the solution is there, and they’re just deciding to be the problem, because lazy 🙂

In an ideal world everyone would make optimized stuff and everyone would be responsible.
A game that is optimized has an entire team working in concert to create a single product where the success and profits of that product is not based on individual content but as a collective. You can’t possibly compare a regular game to content creators on SL. It’s absurd to even suggest that.
Responsibility of optimization on SL rests in the hands of LL, it has to be policed and governed or else it will be the law of the jungle. While I understand it can be really frustrating to see a simple plate of food have 300k+ polys, you cannot police it by preaching good will. The problem is also deeper than that, while poly count is a pain point, the bigger issue is number of textures used, number of alphas (specially overlapping alphas) it is complex and requires strict policing that LL is not providing. Majority of SL designers are hobbiest who barely have a good understanding of the basics, most of them still think “highpoly texture on lowpoly” is a thing as perceived in comments on this site.
Then you have the creators who constantly make posts bragging about how efficient they are with their topology and vram usage, yet despite what they think their topology is awful, incredibly wasteful and they are in fact not even optimized on vram. Try telling her that, her ego is too big to handle it.
So this is annoying because it’s a case of the blind trying to lead the blind.
Don’t worry Darling, my 270 fps in SL are just enough. I just decide with my wallet what I buy. I just said ugly ass shoes that are optimized is NOTHING someone will buy when they can have loads of nice shoes easily in a virtual world. She should up her game and make pretty things. Even having a high powered Gaming PC, what was said is still true. Proper LOD does help, and having less ‘triangles’ does help. Do you know you can still make very stunning and great looking items with less triangles than most of the creators currently use? This is why heavily populated sims lag really badly. Everyone wearing huge amounts of that laggy mesh with tons of triangles, all packed together in a club, which probably bought mesh decorations with tons of triangles in them as well. The reason, as someone correctly pointed out, is that most of those creators don’t actually create their own mesh, just upload mesh models from websites, they have no idea how to optimize the mesh for SL.

Also as someone else said your connection speed after a certain point is irrelevant, because of the server bottleneck issue. Your internet speed is 1GB/second right? That would mean downloading a 50GB game should only take you 50 seconds right? Good luck downloading any 50GB game in 50 seconds on any store front.

Quick little lesson for free, since you don’t have the ambition to learn more on your own- no matter how much bandwidth you personally have, you will only get so much from LL servers, and over that level your own is irrelevant. It’s not much that you get from LL, either. So having fast, reliable service definitely helps SL run better, but you’re not getting SL any faster than someone on a fraction of your bandwidth, because LL is the bottleneck. You’re probably going to dismiss this because you don’t understand it and continue being ignorant; you can lead a jackass to water, but you can’t make her think.

When you block a narcissist you inflict narcissistic injury that sends them into narcissistic rage – dangerous. Even if you did it in a straightforward and respectful way, they just hate feeling rejected and inadequate. It shakes the false image they have of themselves which is that everyone worships the ground they walk on. They see the world in black and white. If they can’t get to you directly they will do things like spreading rumors about you to anyone who will listen and who they have wrapped around their little finger. They stalk you to wear you down in an attempt to trauma bond and get you to contact them (DON’T). It’s manipulation and control. I’ve been in a similiar situation where they tried to become me by copying everything I did, contacting people in my sphere and trying to turn them against me as well as gathering flying monkeys to gangstalk me. It’s all a game to be won for them. They’re sick and empty people. It got so bad I had to contact authorities and get a protection order. If it escalates, get help. There are many places and people who will be glad to offer you a safe space in sl.
This is why I’m a skeptic when it comes to sl dating. Some men don’t get it when a woman clearly says: no ty you’re not for me, I don’t see a future with you sl or rl. It just wont work sorry. Instead of dealing with that like a grown adult with acceptance and walking away they choose to make the person miserable for expressing disinterest. It becomes really creepy and uncomfortable for the affected person being stalked who is just trying to get on with their life. It’s crazy and obsessive to stalk and slander someone who clearly doesn’t want anything to do with you. If it doesn’t work out with someone, that’s life, find someone else better suited for you.
